While I do mind story in a racing game I don't see how much they can do with cars as the biggest motivation. Initial D is a great show that deals with racing, but the story isn't all that deep or complex. It's just hard to write something compelling based on racing.

I personally prefer games with storyline because it makes the game way more interesting and enjoyable when it comes to spend some time playing it, I definitely recommend racing games with storyline, those are the best.

I prefer games that have characters with a storyline in other games. For example, the Mario kart series.

I wouldn't mind games with a story line. It makes it a lot more interesting to play the game and to follow the story and it also makes the racing aspect a lot less boring and adds emotion so some parts of the game in a sense.

I agree. A bit of storyline to help the pace along is great. The only time I get bored or frustrated is when the game focuses too much on the story that the gameplay gets overlooked. At which point I feel like I'm just watching a movie while holding a controller doing nothing. Racing games are not that overboard when it comes to storylines though, thankfully.

For me, the games without a storyline are boring. I love the games with a storyline. The storyline is one of the main element of a game (in my opinion). There are many games with amazing storylines that you can try

Not particularly no. It's the same with sports games, some titles you enjoy because you can just plug it in and play and it requires little to no thinking. Stories are imperative in most gaming titles but for racing, don't fix what's not broke.

That's why I like tournament mode [and it's variations]. There's no freaking storyline. You race, you win, progress and be crowned champion eventually. Next time you come back you once again try to be champion. I love that.

What games have tournament modes? Are you talking about like Mario Kart where it's a points system? Or do you mean an actual tournament where you can matched up in brackets and you advance through each win?

    Speed Freaks
    Bike Race Pro
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. They call it Championship mode.

    And many others . . .
Yeah. That's what I'm referring to. Actual tournaments.

I got to check those games out. So those races are just against one other car? I remember playing one of the original hot wheels games fro the PC. That was an awesome game.

I prefer racing against other cars/AI because for some games which demand that you play against a human opponents online, there's no guarantee that you'll find someone you'll be playing against.

I'm a big fan of racing games with some sort of storyline but freedom to complete it or not, for example CRT (Crash) did an amazing job to make the player want to finish the story and unlock newer maps at the same time but still giving you the ability to somewhat 'free roam' around the hub that had these maps, it was a lot of fun!

That's interesting the game allows you to explore the maps. GTA isn't a traditional racing game, but being allowed to roam the environment was one of the coolest aspects of the game. You can just roam around without having to play the missions.

This is what I like as well. I'm not particularly fond of storylines but when it's this type I don't mind it as much. I've played a few other racing games with this type of selection but I can't remember the titles.
