    I don't.

I like games that don't have some fancy storyline. Games where all there is to it is racing, winning and racing some more with each successive level being a little harder. Those are the racing games are love.

    What of you guys?

I really don't like games with a story line when it comes to racing games. I just want to race and quickly get on the track. I don't even customize my car that much. My boyfriend can spend up to half an hour tricking out this car, but I think that is so boring and I just want to play.

Yeah I usually don't pay attention to the story line unless it's an adventure game. I don't think stories fit with a racing game. I mean I understand there should be a purpose for racing, but I think a storyline slows it down and I lose interest if too much time is spent on dialogue.

Sort of, but as long as it's done well.

The first Toca Race Driver for example had a pretty good storyline and if I recall, NFS: Underground had a little bit of one. I really enjoyed those games so yeah, I'm all for racing game storylines but as long as it's played out well.

I don't either. I don't even care about the storyline in non racing games so I'm even more disinterested when it doesn't affect the gameplay at all. I understand why they exist though because I'm sure it adds a lot and even I myself would miss it if it were completely gone.

Definitely! I love racing games with a storyline, it makes the game more interesting and you actually race for a reason not for the money and "fame". :D

Most of the game have the fame aspect as a goal though. Like they say at the beginning stuff like "climb the ranks, be the best, get noticed and get recognised"

The last two Forza Horizon games have had this bit of a story line with the fame goal in mind.

I prefer the fame and money thing. All you have to do is focus on winning or even if you lose a few races as long as you win more races than your opponents and get crowned the best . . .

Nothing compares to that. We all have different preferences though.

I love stories in video games, and I honestly think that a game with a bad story is better than a game without any story at all. That being said, I loved the Need For Speed games that actually had a good storyline (such as Most Wanted 2005), but lately most racing games have had pretty bad stories.

Yeah, different strokes for different folks. I loved the old Need for Speed games where I had to chase down "bosses" to unlock new parts for cars and places on the map.

Did underground 1 & 2 have a storyline at all? I seem to remember it had something.

Still, they were both great games.

I agree, many games have had lacklustre storylines. If there isn't much plot behind the game I'd say just leave it out altogether and focus on delivering a good racing game. The only good racing storyline I've come across so far would probably be Need For Speed Most Wanted. (they tried pretty hard to work on that one, hiring numerous actors for the cutscenes)

I agree. Even though I don't care much about the story I appreciate its presence because it gives you a bit more atmosphere and as you've mentioned, something more to work towards other than just finishing in first place.

I definitely agree, racing games without fancy storylines are like beautiful women who are dumb. After all, if there is no good storyline then we'll be losing interest very easy after we'll get used to the gameplay, exactly like it happened with a lot of racing games in the past.

For me, NFS Carbon had one of the best storylines ever when it comes about racing games, I remember I couldn't stop playing until I finished it after about a week.

I think storylines in gaming is alright as long as it makes sense to the gameplay, as in it's still racing related. For example, I really enjoyed 2005 NFS:Most Wanted. The gameplay's good and the storyline is decent as well. But given the options between the two, I would definitely go with no storyline, since it's much easier to just race without all the cutaways.

I like to have a storyline in the sense of a driver progressing through a career, like Gran Turismo for instance. I think it's good for a game to have different modes. I don't think a story is integral to a racing game, but adding one can make it more interesting to progress through. It doesn't have to be anything complex.

I have always enjoyed the Need for Speed story lines. Although, my favorite racing game of all time, Grand Turismo, doesn't really have a story line. I wouldn't mind if GT got a good writer and wrote a cool story for the campaign mode.

I beg to disagree. Well, in a way, because I liked Gran Turismo too which doesn't have a storyline. There are games in which the storyline is an essential aspect of its gameplay. Otherwise, there would be no single player campaign, or it would be boring. For example, the story of Need For Speed:Most Wanted and Carbon is what makes both of them a great game. It is, in my opinion, the defining aspect of both games and their best feature. I never would have liked them both if not for the storyline.

Well, you can't say that any storyline is boring. I also don't take much interest in the storyline of a particular racing game but if the storyline is interesting, it makes sense to me and I follow and understand the story first. Therefore, I like the racing games with interesting storyline.

I also kind of enjoyed the NFS storylines. The older ones were cliche even for the time but it was still enjoyable nonetheless and this is coming from someone who doesn't care about plot in video games at all. I think they realized that no one was playing for the story so they just had fun with it and made it cheesy.
