Some call them knock out races. Others elimination races but it's all the same. Either you get eliminated from a race if you finish last or for some games if you pass your racing rivals they get eliminated from the race. I've never liked the latter because I like to have the opponents around, makes the game more challenging. Do any of you like such racing games?
This sort of game mode is pretty fun. I think it's also called "last car standing" or something. Basically the last car to cross the finish line on each lap gets eliminated until one car remains. It's a good mode to play and pushes you to challenge more, but in online play it does get a little scrappy where people try some dirty passes to make sure they get past.
I don't like it either because I see it as just another variation of finishing first which I already find a bit boring but I admit it does help change it up a bit when I find myself having to do it just to unlock later stages.
I like this game mode, because I think it keeps you on your toes: one small mistake and you can be the one eliminated, with no time to get back in the game. It's way better than the normal races, but there's something about the classic racing formula which seems to be more popular with the others, and that's why this game mode isn't that used.
Not really fond of it. I'm the same as you, I like having all the competitors around until the end of the race. You can get started off on the wrong foot but recover at the end, this game mode doesn't care about that.
I'm much more a fan of the traditional format of racing and like having all competitors cross the line but like you I love how this mode keeps you on your toes along with the knowledge that the slightest mistakes could eliminate you.
You're right, I guess the biggest different here is that you have a chance to lose in the middle of the race before everyone has finished. I like how asphalt did this where they offer the mechanic of infection which I think changes it up even further.
I think this mode would be a great way to conclude an online racing series. People from many different regions who have come top in their region all come together in an elimination battle to determine the best of the best. The separation between the men and the boys so to speak.
It's just another racing mode to me, nothing particularly special. I find such modes to be less popular with online players though, since if you end up being eliminated early in the game all you can do is spectate how the race ends out. It's more passive and boring in that regard.
I don't think it's a mode that works in a public lobby, but for a private lobby where you've got players grouped together then I think it does work quite well.
You're right. I think the biggest complaint I have about this is that if you're eliminated early then that is the end of the game for you which makes for very short games when you are not too good and it only ends up being a bit too discouraging.
Maybe it could work in a public lobby but with shorter tracks and fewer numbers in the server. So for instance a limit of 5 players per server and tracks that are no more than 2 miles in length. As for laps, how about a 7 or 8 laps depending on track so it gives even the player in last place at least a few laps of racing before they are eliminated.
I completely agree with you. I really love elimination races. They add some extra challenge to the game and I completely believe that fact that there is no fun without a challenge. They are completely different than normal racing games.
I like them. I like it because it gives me reason to push harder and to go faster. Not like another race where you can chill in the back and make up for it on the last stretch/lap. In these races, the goal is to be in front at all times.
While I can understand why people like these kind of races, I'm not a lover of them myself. I like my racing games to be as true to real life as possible, and as far as I'm aware you very rarely get these types of races in the real world. Aren't these kind of games that have this mode more of an arcade game rather than racing simulators?
Depends on my mood really, if I'm feeling like going overly competitive then I will choose that that kind of race but if I want a chill playtime then I wont. But they do add some extra spice to the game when it gets boring, I'd recommend them a lot when you have nothing else to do.
I kind of do enjoy elimination races, as long as you don't end up being last haha! You got to go fast and try to get in first as your only bet really.
And I think that's another reason I'm not a massive fan. If your playing online especially, everyone tries the same strategy and tries to lead from the front on the very first lap. That then often means it just turns into a free for all and there's vehicles all over the place crashing out. Again, not exactly realistic is it?
Good question, and I would like to add my opinion here. Elimination mode is good if you want to really spice things up, because you need to be good at all times, else you risk getting eliminated. This is good if you and your friends are playing competitively. However, not many racing games have this feature or mode ingame, so it's pretty hard to implement it manually.
I always prefer such games. Helps relieve pressure and at the end it makes this one on one race which gets really interesting especially when the opponent is really good.
