Yeah it definitely gets way more fun when you have some friends to mess around with online. Finding random strangers is good too but it's different when you can plan with other people and just basically carry out tasks in groups.
I've got some tips for online. Don't bother hosting missions unless you've got friends already online. You just have to barge in. You can use your phone to join random missions. Once there you can make some friends that you enjoy playing with. Some of the best moments come from interactions with other players. If you see a group of players go there but be prepared for a fire fight. You can use passive mode & catch some great warzone photos. Online is all about what you make it and your imagination has to carry you part of the way.
To be honest, I think GTA Online is better suited for those who have friends to play with . It can be daunting to step into a free world at level one, only to get mobbed by high levelled players who are griefing the lobby. Personally, if you're going to play alone, I think the best option for you is to head into your own private lobby for a while to get used to the game, maybe level up a bit, and then head into the open lobbies once you feel comfortable enough.
Yeah, doing crazy stuff with friends really speeds up the time and the whole evening is gone. Though if your friends don't have GTA V, you can always try to make friends on the internet (just be careful)
I don't grief anyone. I'm a high level but majority of my time is spent in passive mode. I don't kill unless someone kills me first. Don't get me wrong I'm a good killer but I don't see the need to kill random players. I just like to chill and ride around with my friends. We only do verbal griefing. Bad sing alongs and the such.
It seems Rockstar don't really know how to breathe life into a multiplayer component. Sure, they gave us a lot of stuff to do in Online, but it just feels off. If you want to play a really good GTA multiplayer, try out San Andreas MP. It's still crazy active, and you don't need a very good computer in order to run it.

No, I don't like playing online because out of nowhere people come out of the wood works and try to kill you. For no apparent reason but to just kill you and ruin your online experience.
If you have friends to play with, then the game online is very fun. You can do a lot of different things and I don't think that it ever gets boring. We ofter drive around trolling people, fly with the airplanes or do some crazy stuff that no one has done before.
I have found that online can be quite boring if you just go into it alone without anyone you know playing. You can still find something fun to do, but the amount of crazy things you can do in it with one or a few of your friends is what makes it really great.
