I think I was 5 or 6 years old when I first played Pole Position. Back then it was only a quarter to play. It had a steering wheel and a shifter that had only 2 gears, high and low. What's your first arcade racing game you played?
Daytona USA for me. I fell in love with it, absolutely revolutionary racing game for its time with 4 player simultaneous racing. I must have spent a few hundred on that game in the arcades! :x
My first real experience was Daytona USA as well, but technically my first ever would be Outrun although I only was able to play it once or twice and I never really liked it all that much. I was way too young to appreciate or remember most of it.
I love the mario kart arcade game, it's so much better than the real game and it's great fun to play next to friends!
SEGA Rally 2. In my country, arcade games are really, REALLY rare, so I only played my first arcade game about 4 years ago in a game lounge at a mall. It was the single arcade machine they had, and the only one I've ever seen in real life.
Are you asking "arcade racer" as in the style of gaming? Or "arcade racer" as in literally going to an arcade and playing in those car-like arcade cabinets? If you're talking about the later, I didn't really play anything like that until SEGA made Crazy Taxi. Up until then I was always shy to play those kinds of games because I didn't need people seeing how bad I sucked. In all fairness though, I was a kid and it's not like I knew how to drive or had a license back then.
I've never played on the arcade, because somehow I though it was a waste of money. As if I just put money into it and the arcade would stop working or something.
Mine was Daytona USA as well, though I honestly haven't played that many arcade games...kind of a shame because I usually find them enjoyable enough.
I was trying to think hard when I saw the title of this post lol. This would have been a long long time ago and whilst I do remember playing some retro arcade racing games I couldn't for the life of me remember what they were called... until you mentioned Pole Position! That one I remember playing.
Pretty sure it was some sort of NASCAR arcade game at some movie theater... I don't remember, it's been a long time.
When I was 5 or 6 years old, these machines weren't popular anymore. I am a bit younger than you, probably, as I am only 19. However, not to go off-topic, first racing game that I have ever played was Trackmania Sunrise. I loved that game and it was so fun to play it, but of course, when I installed it a few months ago, it was boring and it wasn't nearly as good. Well, I guess it was something new for me, back then. However, I've played NFS: Underground 2 after that, and I still enjoy that game from time to time.
My first arcade racing game was probably Sega Rally. Since my hometown didn't have any arcades I played it when my family and I went on vacation to some other town; I still remember how fascinated I was about this game, it was an awesome feeling.
I actually can't recall the first arcade racing game I played. I used to have a go on the one in the cinema every time we went there as children, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. Out of the racing games I do remember though, I think my first arcade one would have to be Crash Team Racing.
The thing is where I live there are no arcades to begin with so I really do not have any in particular. The first racing game that I have ever played in my life though is Mario Kart on the SNES.
Looks like we're arcade buddies. That was also my first but I enjoyed it. My local grocery store had one & I would always beg my mom for quarters to let me play because I knew my dad wouldn't cave.
That picture of the arcade machine brings back memories. That steering wheel was awesome, I spent a ton of quarters on those. I would love to have one in the garage or man-cave!
Yep, Pole Position is the one that sticks in my mind. Was there a Pole Position two player version? I remember one having two steering wheels but can't remember the name.
