Certain games won't let you play without an internet connection, is this the case? You can always go into airplane mode on your mobile and then try to open the app up or have him only play it when he's able to connect to wifi.

I don't know if you're being charged, possibly if there is no wi-fi available. It is most likely just connecting to the ad server. As jcairns82 says, try it in airplane mode.

If the device is rooted there are ways you can block it from accessing the internet, but that's a whole other conversation :p

I don't think you can get charged without your consent, otherwise this company would probably have gotten sued by now. It's more likely that the game just requires you to connect online first, I think, but it's best to double check and read the comments and the specifications in the release page of the app store or their official website if they have one.

I you are on a prepaid plan and you have to connect to the internet, then you're being charged because you are using the internet. But for the game itself, you'll know that you are being charged if you have to input your credit card and other information or if you are taken to the Google Play Store to approve of a certain transaction. If not, then you are not being charged by the game. You are just paying to connect to the internet. Nothing more, nothing less.

Almost all free apps now have ads built into them. They are annoying mostly.

Well, the app just connects to the ad server. Free games usually have ads in it, as the developers want to earn money with their apps of course. If there was any malicious on the app which could charge you (you'll be charged if you're not on WiFi of course and you don't have a flatrate), it wouldn't has been published to the app store.

I normally just delete the game if that happens all the time, if I really enjoy the game then I might keep it but that does get really annoying.

Personally, I hate games that require you to view the ad before even playing the game. Usually, I just delete it and not even bother to try it out.

If you pay for every internet connection individually then you are being charged something, if not you're not charged. I personally don't like the adds in the game and usually don't want to play the games that have this popup adds installed in them. I don't mind the small adds on the top or bottom of the screen, but the popup adds are just too annoying to handle.

Never heard of the game, but when most game starts your phone warns you of what the game will have access to, and you can choose not to use them. They cannot charge you for anything, except that if it is an ad driven game, it will keep running ads and use up your internet, which is something that can be avoided if you play it offline. But I am sure there are better games out there that are free and have no such ads, so it may be best to look for another game.

Sounds odd.. I'd do some checks to make sure it's not charging you..

There are some apps that install adware or snoop on it's customers. Don't be fooled, even apps from the official marketplace can be malicious.
