Has anyone here ever created or thought about creating your own racing game? It's something that I've always loved to have been able to do. I did indeed get into computer programming/coding for a while and I did make a few games. This was years ago so they were not that great compared to the most recent games. However, I have never been able to create a racing game. I really wouldn't know how to accomplish the multi-directional scrolling 3D graphics. I imagine that it must be quite difficult to achieve and that a lot of work needs to go into it.
Realistically, I want to make my own game but I don't think I'd make a racing game because I think I'd prefer to just make something very simple. When it comes to racing games I think I would prefer just playing them instead of making them, but I admit I have some features I've always wanted to see so if I did have all the resources I'd probably take the opportunity. I'd most likely just make burnout clones left and right to be completely honest because I am obsessed with that game.
I've looked into making custom tracks for Mario Kart DS a long time, never really succeeded because I just couldn't finish any project back then, but the testversion were really fun and I'd recommend everyone to try to make a track at least. Making an entire game is really hard and I find the most creativity lies in making the courses so that's why I looked into that a lot. Mechanics of a game and cars are also fascinating, but the most 'visible' result is the track you race on, and that's also a really important factor for a lot of gamers.
I agree I think this sounds very fun. I've never tried it myself because I don't play MK that often but I would be glad to see this in more racing games.
I never thought about creating my own to be honest. Frankly, I will probably never even try. Since I am more of a action beat them up kinda guy then
I'm a programmer but sadly not a game one. I thought about designing some of the graphics and mechanics for a racing game, but I don't think I could be able to do a game all by my lonesome.
I've seen some games made by only one person, and as long as they aren't overly ambitious the product usually turns out alright, but unfortunately most of the solo projects I come across are overly ambitious so they turn out looking unfinished.
Making a game can be rather challenging and rewarding once you are done making the game but since it's very hard work it might take a really long time to get the job done. I saw some tutorials a while back when I was learning to how use Blender. Apparently you can learn how to make a 3D game using the software without ever learning how to code. I never looked at those tutorials so I don't know if it's possible or not. Anyway since making a game can be very hard work, I've never thought of making one.
I think I'd be able to design in-game stuff like tracks and liveries, even though my creativity is pretty rubbish(!), but I seriously doubt I would be able to create my own racing game. Just thinking about it now, I have no idea where to start!
I think being able to make your own tracks is fun enough at least. I remember having a great time playing with this feature on excite bike.
MTX Mototrax had a feature like it but you was limited in that you could only make them inside a stadium. It was good though. You could lay out the track and put in jumps, bumps and ruts. The new course maker has recently been released for GT 6 so I really must give that a try some time.
Nice, thanks for the sugegstions I'll have to check these out. I'm sure my friends would have a great time with it too and we'll probably end up testing each other's courses.
You could learn if you wanted to. Like I mentioned in another post you can create a game without learning how to program. There's software you could use to create games without ever learning how to code. It's not as easy as the tutorials will make it sound but I'm certain if you badly want to learn how it's done, after a few years you'd have learned enough to make a simple racing game.
I've heard about these and I've always been curious. I guess I'll give it a try myself as even if it turns out to be less than what I expected I know it will still serve as a good introduction to game making.
It can take a couple of years to learn how to make a simple game. Tried it, found it wasn't easy and gave up since I wasn't that interested in making games. Maybe I'll try it once again at some indefinite time in future when I no longer like the games being made.
Well, even indie games require more than one person to function if your game becomes even remotely popular. There is a lot of back-end stuff that needs to be sorted out constantly.
I'd recommend you give the game a go if you can find a copy of it The track editor is nice but it also has many motorcross features such as super & motocross racing as well as a freestyle sort of event.
Sounds great and it's even better that they have motocross features because I'm always looking for something new other than the traditional racing game types. I've been a bit busy with the holidays but now I can get back to spending time looking into these things as a hobby.
I've done a game development course, but have never attempted a racing game. If I did it'd have to be a simple one. I guess the idea of getting the physics and A.I. right intimidates me. As a developer I'm better at putting together things like data structures, and usually focus on RPG type systems. I like doing tile maps and inventories for example. The most I've done towards a racing game is to create a track in Maya. I also had that 3D game maker software when I was a kid and you could put together race tracks on that. This thread has got me thinking it'd be a fun thing to try one day though.
There are game making apps out there, but I'm not sure if they are racing oriented. I would imagine creating a racing game would be easier, but I really have no idea. The thought of creating any game boggles my mind.
