A lot of people think he's crazy and whatever movie he'll be in will be garbage because of his public life and his personal life. To me, this is unfair. As an example, I don't like Miley Cyrus as a person, but her music is something I can respect. Her music isn't that bad, her public image is. So, when people think Tom Cruise's movies will be bad because of his public image, that isn't the case. I think his movies in recent memory are very good, with the last two entries in his Mission Impossible franchise being absolutely top notch and his sci-fi action movie Edge of Tomorrow adding into that. Your thoughts?
To be fair to the public, I don't think it's the persona alone that turns off people but his choice in roles lately have gotten a bit generic, especially when compared to his modern counterparts that take very unique acting roles. Recently all his movies have been mostly just about a guy being a hero which is alright but nothing too noteworthy.
True, I understand that line of thinking. Some of his roles like Oblivion is just too generic and nothing really that people would take note of or would care really much. I'd like to think that his movies like Edge of Tomorrow and Mission Impossible are in the high end of the spectrum of the action films he's been in lately, but you're right. He needs to be in something of a breaking of a typecast soon. A dramatic role of some type would be perfect. He's a great action star, but it's been a long time since we've seen his dramatic action chops.
I'd like to see that as well because I think he is alright. I think he just lost heart for offbeat scripts since that movie where he played a Rockstar didn't take off, but that's just my guess.
He did lost the plot a bit in his personal life, but looks cool on the silver screen and, to be honest, I've never watched movies based only on the stars that play in them.
True, I also understand how you think. There are some movies that just advertise the stars that are in the movie and then never really get into the plot. Even though, I thought American Hustle was great, seeing the commercials were just weird. Obviously, the movie has an all star cast containing some of the biggest names out there like Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams etc. But still, a movie should never be just about the stars it contains. That's just dumb, even though marketing wise it's smart.
I think the problem is that he doesn't play enough bad guy roles. He was brilliant in that movie he did with Jamie Fox as the cab driver. But he seemed to peak at that point and become all about mission impossible and his family. So unless he does something like a crossover involving that character, James Bond and Jason Bourne. I don't see any reason to see him other then that Jack Reacher movie.
