It wasn’t that long ago that a screenshot from a racing game fooled the Nissan corporation so well that they tweeted video game images of their sports cars, believing them to be real. It’s easy to chuckle at their mistake, but it could soon happen to you. Need For Speed developer Ghost Games has revealed four images. Two are real, the other two are rendered from the upcoming game’s Frostbite engine. Can you tell which is which? Scroll down for the answer. . . . . . The fake images are the ones on the left; the ones on the right are real. The only visible giveaway between the two sets is that the sky in the fake pictures is one monochromatic color, which doesn’t occur in real life. The Need For Speed reboot launches November 3 for Playstation 4, XBox One and PC, though to get graphics that look this good, you will probably need a high-end PC. Console, forget about it. Haha, I guessed! What gave it away was the ground on the top left one since it's not as realistic as the rest. Anyway, I'm still really, really impressed by the level of graphics!
I could stare at these images all day. That is some really impressive work! I really might have to pick this game up, just for it's looks alone.
Huh, fantastic! I never would've thought we could ever achieve photorealism in games, but it seems that we did! Sure enough, these are just screenshots and the game will be nothing like that (especially if it will be dumbed down for consoles, like all other titles), but it's still amazing. Makes me wonder whether we'll actually invent graphics better than reality one day.
Graphics better than reality is something straight out of a sci-fi flick! How would we be able to achieve that? I'm trying to work it out but it's just making my head hurt.
The one thing that's problematic with photo-realistic graphics is then the game becomes less of a game.
I picked the one on the left, top and bottom. So I was right. The way I did it is too look at the sign in the mid back ground. They look kind of flat and kind of fake.
It is impressive and although there are a few tells they are way too subtle and it can still fool me. The night time one seems a bit more off but that's only a minor comment as it still does look very photorealistic.
Yeah it fooled me a bit and there are only few slight differences that give the real and game images away. The night shots both look the same from my perspective, and looking back now at both the day and night shots I am having difficulty identifying the two. The one thing that does slightly give it away for me now is the kerb in the game shot. It doesn't look perfectly rounded. It's very subtle but you can just make out it doesn't quite make a perfect curve.
Well, the graphics are really good, but games will never look like real life, some things are really hard to recreate in cg. Look carefully at the tires, at the colors and shades, and, of course, in real life there are always debris on the road that you'll never find in games. But I must say it again: the graphics are really good.
It's a great achievement when you have to nitpick each and every detail just to confirm it's not real. It makes me really interested and curious to see what the future of games will look like.
It is a testament to how good graphics technology has come, but as jetliposting said games will never look like real life. Even if we achieve a sort of virtual reality there will still be something that gives the game away and kills it. It's just a shame that this latest NFS requires a mandatory internet connection to play it. Oh well...
