Let’s be honest, with a game literally titled “Hitman”, you’re going to be killing a lot of people. Some intentionally, some possibly not. And that can make the game a bit dark, if not dark in full. What’s the solution? Humor! What else? Or at least that’s what IO Interactive stated in a demo at Gamescom.

“We take these realistic environments and we spice them up with what we’d say is the Hitman humour,” Hannes Seifert says. “We need that because you’re an assassin at the peak of his career; it’s a sinister job but with the humour it makes it very entertaining. It doesn’t make it so dark. That is something that I think is a trademark of what Hitman is.”

“We try to have this abstract, realistic style. I do not believe in full realism for a game like that; it would be too grim. Also, I think ethically speaking that would not be okay. It needs to be very apparent that this a game; a game that wants to entertain a mature audience. It’s not a game for children; we are very clear about that. Our players are, like 30-plus, right? We have lots of fans that have been with the series for a long time, and that is something we always need to take into account.”

What do you think of this? Do you agree that Hitman needs the humor to make it seem less “super violent”? Will it even matter in your mind?

I liked the Hitman series where it left off on Absolution. I thought it was spot on and to be honest I didn't find any humor in that. There was even a two way mirror in the strip joint.

I liked the realism and gameplay. I'm in my 40s, I find everything about the game entertaining.

I could see how that old work but they have to do it right and just enough to still maintain the identity of the franchise. I think they are just trying to set themselves apart from other games and it may be a good move but they should keep focus on what made people love the title in the first place.

This could turn out seriously bad for the series. I liked the previous Hitman games but now that they want to replace the violence with dark humour, it just doesn't seem right.

If I want dark humour I'll go and play Saints Row or something.

You can't inject any humor into Agent 47. That doesn't make sense. Keep with the violence, improve the gameplay, and give us a better story than normal.

Then again, I'll probably play the next Hitman game, regardless of the changes they make. -_-

It depends on what humor they're thinking about. A dark joke here and there wouldn't actually be that bad and would actually make the game cooler, but if they constantly crack jokes for the sake of it it could be a turn-off.

I love the dark humor you encounter in the GTA series, so if they made something similar to that, it will be a plus for me, at least.

Agreed. Personally, I think as long as what they make has a soul then people will like it, regardless of which tone they ultimately favor. Even if it turns of some of the older fans, if it is a good game then it will find new fans.

I'm very apprehensive about it. GTA is known for it's dark humour where-as Hitman is more a more serious game and I think the two should be kept separate. Sure maybe make something humours every now and again but don't make it all about the humour.

Yeah, as long as their dark humor doesn't feel too close to GTA I think they will be fine since there are lots of ways to approach this type of tone. Hopefully they know what they are doing.

I still have my doubts about it all. Yeah I understand the series may want to develop and such but I stand by the saying "if something isn't broken, don't fix it".
