It makes me feel like a kid, which I why I love the wheel. It also gives me a much more realistic feel when racing other people
It'd be amazing if wheels could somehow change how tough they are when turning depending on the car's hydraulic or mechanical transmission.
With some of the posts on this thread, I think people would be better off just buying a track day at a circuit rather than playing racing games, haha. At the end of the day, a racing game can only be realistic to a certain degree, and people have to remember that it is only a game after all.
Definitely wheel when it comes to racing, though a lot of racing games don't have proper steering wheel support, surprisingly. It feels much smoother than using a joystick or keyboard.
It's interesting that you mention the steering wheel support in the driving games as you'd have thought that, even though not everyone has one, like you say, they'd cater for the obes that do as a priority.
Yeah, those were my thoughts before but I guess there are games which don't rely on physics and realism that much and are just racing games, where a joystick does the job decently.
Racing games can be controlled adequately with a joypad, there's no doubt about that, but if racing wheels are available, then you'd imagine the game developers would try and at least make the game compatible?
Hey, I recently bought an Xbox 360 controller just to be able to play project cars on my pc and let me just say that the experience is good. Let me tell you why, with a gamepad you can control the throttle and the brakes using as much pressure as you want much like a real car hence it improves ride handling and driving, plus due to the sticks the steering is easier and feels much more natural, and lastly if the gamepad has force feedback you get the feel of the kerbs, the engine much like a real car. Moreover good wheels are so expensive, hence with a gamepad you can get a similar experience at a fraction of the cost. So for a poor pc gamer like me gamepad FTW!
Well, it does take some time to make the game compatible with a steering wheel. Maybe the developers didn't have the money or time to.
I find it much harder with the wheel but it's so much more fun. I've used paddles too and that was a nightmare but I was drunk so it was just funny.
I have always preferred the realism of the wheel. Yeah, it is harder naturally, but at the end of the day it is user preference so use what you like.
A lot of racing games need to adopt the same settings that Gran Turismo 6 did when it comes to playing with a wheel. That game could let you adjust almost everything so you got the wheel to be compatible and sync with the game, whereas a lot of games these days don't.
I enjoy playing with a wheel, but I had having to store it. It takes up a lot of room in my tiny room. I like how it is more realistic than a gamepad, but the game immersion is really just the same. I get so sucked in via the screen that either options both feel cool at the end of the day.
And VR is going to take it a step further. Even if you are using a standard game controller, racing would still feel real. I guess though this is what will force more racing game fans to get themselves a wheel because if it feels like you are in a car . . .
For me, both are equal. I have played the games with both the equipment and I think all of my experiences were same. If I compare it strictly, I would find the gamepad to be more comfortable.
After years of playing racing games on a wheel pad, it's hard to go to a steering wheel. It will take some time and adjustment, but for the most part game pads are the most popular. Very few gamers will go out and buy a wheel just for one or two games. I think more of the hard core racers will pick one up for sure.
I've tried a wheel before, it's certainly a more fun experience in my opinion. I think if you want to do well, with something that is familiar, that a controller is far more optimal. But I think you can get pretty good with a racing wheel, and it makes for a far more realistic and fun experience if you do.
I've been using a $300 wheel for several years now, and I have to say it's well worth the investment if you enjoy racing games.
