Slightly Mad Studios’ realistic racer Project Cars was released for PCs last week, and for consoles yesterday (except the Wii U; we are told that version is still coming). Was the game worth the wait? According to all the major websites, it was, though most of them have pointed out the game was built for a more hardcore audience.

IGN’s Luke Reilly gave the game an 8.9 out of 10 and said “The action is ferocious and tactical, the weather effects are awesome, and it’s brimming with content to explore. This is real racing done right.”

Matthew Kato of GameInformer awarded it an 8.5 out of 10. “In a genre where it can be hard to differentiate yourself, Project Cars makes its mark. It’s not as strong as it could be in all areas, but Slightly Mad Studios’ attention to detail and racing chops make the game a contender.”

Destructoid’s Brett Makedonski felt slightly different, saying the game was good but that it had a “long learning curve.” “It’s niche, and it’s for those who take their racing games seriously. It does most of what it sets out to do, and it does that very well.” He gave it a 7 out of 10.

GameSpot’s Austin Walker also mentions the difficulty but gives the game an 8/10. “Project CARS doesn’t deliver a fantasy of accumulation and progress. What it does deliver is a simulation of racing as tense as it is deep.”

On Metacritic’s rankings, the XBox One version scores lowest with a score of 81, followed by the PC version with a score of 84. The Playstation 4 version currently sits slightly higher at 85.

It's definitely about 100 times better than I thought it would be. I thought that something would go wrong upon release, and that hasn't been the case!

The graphics look stellar, and so far it seems to be a racing game to have met the hype much more than The Crew.

I'm not surprised it's being so well received by critics, it looks like an amazing game. I haven't had the chance to play it myself, but from the gameplay I've seen on Twitch it looks like one of those racing games I must have.

After playing it for a week I am not surprised it is being praised by critics. It really is a good racing simulator & I'd recommend it to anyone in an interest in motor racing.

Considering that even the slightly negative criticism about it still allowed for a 7 out of 10 score I'd say that it's probably a fairly safe game to buy. I think there's definitely a market for more serious race gamers and if this fills that need then we will surely see sequels for it in the years to come.

Seems like a really really solid racing sim based on what I've seen, though I haven't played it. Looks like it was worth the wait, though, so that's good! Kinda surprised the PS4 version scored more than the PC version, though.
