This console generation’s arms race in the racing genre is a competition to see which racer can have the most spectacularly realistic weather effects. Puddles, evaporation, rainbows, that’s the next-gen difference.

Driveclub escalates that battle today with a big 1.4 GB update that adds the PS4 racer’s ambitious dynamic weather system, as well as new tracks, other features, and support for upcoming DLC. The full patch notes for today’s update, available now, are below:

    New Features:
    * Adds weather to the game, for online and offline play.
    * Adds two new tracks, both including reverse variants: Atlanterhavsvegen in Norway and Sinclair Pass in Canada.

    Improvements:
    * Adds the option to configure Throttle/Brake controls onto Up/Down on Right Stick.
    * Adds the ability to access Club Cars when offline.
    * Adds the ability to access Club Paint Jobs when offline.
    * Adds track maps and stats to each track card in Single Event.
    * Adds player statistics to various panels within Single Event and Challenges.
    * Includes more minor bug fixes, performance improvements and usability tweaks.

    Add-ons (coming later in December):
    * Adds support for the Mazzanti Evantra, coming to PlayStation®Store as a free download later in December.
    * Adds support for the Redline Expansion Pack, coming to PlayStation®Store as a premium download later in December. This Expansion Pack includes the Redline Car Pack and Redline Tour Pack.
    * The Redline Car Pack includes 5 new cars: Mercedes SLS AMG E-Drive, McLaren F1 LM, Renault Alpine A110-50, Ferrari 458 Speciale, and Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.
    * The Redline Tour Pack includes 11 new Events and 5 new Trophies.
    * Adds support for the Elements Tour Pack, coming to PlayStation®Store as a premium download later in December.
    * The Elements Tour Pack includes 11 new Events and 5 new Trophies.

Looks beautiful but in the end doesn't really add much to the game. Unless the weather adds dramatically to the feel of the game I don't really think it will make a difference. I would rather they focused some energy on fixing the AI, it's been really punishing to play the game with the current one.

That's a pretty extensive update. It's good that they're pushing out a major update, but the game has already lost most of its luster, especially with The Crew being out. I don't think weather additions are going to save DriveClub anytime soon.

The weather effects look extremely well done, kudos to the devs.

The visual effects are much more stunning as one would expect plus i feel there's more energy being felt on the game unlike the previous version.Generally am impressed.

I'll tell you what. That screenshots looks really good. I might have to bite the bullet and pick up this game. They're committed to making changes. The game looks nice and I've been hearing good reviews of the game.

Looks good, but how does it "move"? And I mean that a picture doesn't show actual gameplay - it's just a static image. Do the Weather Effects added really change the game? Do they change (a lot, realistically or/and in a fun way) the way the cars handle? Do they, to put it simply, affect the gameplay enough to be a worthy addition?

It has to be said, though, that this mania with huge patches after the release of a game has started getting annoying. I live in an area with spotty connection, and although lately I upgraded to a faster one (that was finally available), I remember the time when I had to wait for days to download 1GB. By releasing patches like that you (the game's creator / publisher) make it harder for people in my former position, Internet-access-wise, to enjoy it.

For where is the "enjoyment" in "I bought a console and a game, now I'll just have to wait for them two-three weeks to update and pray there's not a new update for them released in the meantime"?

I would still hold off on DriveClub because of all its issues, some of which still exist right now. The weather effects are pretty enticing, though.

Yeah, as much as I'm impressed by the effects and the realistic graphics it's still not enough to make me that excited to pay full price for something buggy.
