It's not just something specific to one game as far as realistic features go. My job takes me to several NASCAR races a year and I know for a fact that many of the drivers and team members are huge racing gamers. Especially the games that offer great representations of specific tracks. Several drivers in both NASCAR and ARCA use the simulations to practice hitting their points on tracks that they don't have much seat time on or do poorly on. If a professional driver like Dale Jr. like racing games then who am I too dislike them!

Another possibility could be to combine photorealism with imaginative elements. Game creators can get more original with their concepts and ideas of people, places, and things, and give it all such a realistic look. It would literally be such a visual that the player would wonder how such things don't exist. If they can combine the realistic graphics with creative stories and elements, I will definitely be impressed.

I think the games are realistic enough, and anymore would make us lose the appeal and graphics will not feel like a game anymore and feel like a movie. I think the game is impressive and pushed to the limit it can go, and no need to go further as it would be too much. I hope the future games do not start getting artistic or moved back to the old days, as that will be like why did they make a game realistic to just move it back. The game runs well, and also I enjoy the main mode racing against other cars and more to do in the game.

There has to be a limit of it. I think that Ocuolus has definitely helped in games getting vivid. There will come a day when we will be unable to differentiate between a real life pic and a screenshot from game.

In general, racing games can't ever be quite like the real thing. What I mean is, there's always a screen in front of you (except in certain cases -- augmented reality comes to mind). Now, there have been many attempts at making racing games more and more realistic. An example are the shaders used in the games, which give you a nice feel for the surroundings, and the light coming in through your car's 'windows' make it seem like you're actually driving the car. The controllers you play the games with make a huge difference as well: sitting in front of a screen holding a standard console controller just isn't going to feel as real as holding a steering wheel (which acts exactly like a joystick, but it's the feeling that matters) and pressing pedals on the ground. People have also tried to make the steering wheel controllers more realistic by adding car-like resistance to the wheel, which I think is pretty cool.

Honestly, the most realistic thing I personally experienced was playing a racing game in the Motion Sim 4DOF Racing Simulator (not me by the way, some picture I found on Google):

It was amazing, so much fun! We'll see what the augmented reality future can bring us (Oculus Rift anyone?).

They've pushed as far as a console can be pushed, look at project CARS on PC, infinitely better and more realistic not only in physics but in graphics.

They can make it very realistic but not sure they should because you still want a little sense that you're playing a video game and can do a few dangerous things and break the rules. Video games should be fun more than anything else.

I wait for this day to come as well. It seems impossible now but I know a lot of what we currently have seemed impossible at some point so I figure it's just a matter of time.

This has been happening quite a lot lately and I love it, games are more and more realistic and of course that with Oculus and all other technology to come they will even get more, I am loving it. ;)

Games are getting to the pinnacle of graphic realism. Once game graphics can't go any higher than they can focus more on the gameplay and physics. At least I hope so. They need new Ideas and more content. This is next gen but all that has changed has been graphics.

With how highly detailed racing games are getting, all you really need is an occulus rift or something to feel like you're there. Unless you have the money to invest in one of those moving racing machines that try to simulate the rumble and g forces of a car.. pretty extreme but I can't say that I wouldn't have one if I was really into it (and had the money.)

Racing games have really jumped up graphically recently.

This is the type of set up that many professional drivers have in their homes. F1 uses simulators to train drivers for competition I think. But I know many NASCAR drivers are members of iracing. Here's a linkhttp://www.iracing.com/testimonials/

Here's the iracing promotional video. I may start a new thread for this.

Completely agree! Race simulators are super fun, and I think it's amazing how far technology has come to make such games feel so realistic! Just imagine how cool racing games will be in the next 5 years :O

When it comes to certain types of video games, more realistic graphics and gameplay can actually be a bad thing. In racing games, however, the closer the experience gets to the real thing, the better the experience is.

Just to let everyone know - I started a new thread on the website/business "iracing" I'm looking for some suggestions on these sim setups. Just wanted to let everyone know about the new thread.

It can get way more realistic, especially if you use a full driving and steering set. Pair that with PC (Which has a ton of driving simulators), and you'll have an extreme realism station. Project Cars is a good example of a realistic racing game, and I sure am looking forward to it. I haven't played much of Forza, but the traction feels perfect to me.

I think there will always be a limit on how realistic any game will get. I for one look for some great gameplay instead of focusing on graphics. Granted, it plays a huge part in making me buy a game, but that's not an issue anymore.
