I hated that they discontinued this. I'm not a big fan of smartphones, and only ever wanted and considered one or two because of their designs, and this was one of them. I'm still hoping Sony will pick up on it again someday, but I'm doubtful. What did you guys think of this phone, do you want it brought back as much as I do?
I never tried it, don't really understand the appeal of it honestly. Casual gaming is one thing but I don't think we have the technology to blend mobile gaming and mobile telecommunications yet.
I agree that the lines are a bit blurry because there is a mobile gaming market already. I think we do have the technology for it now, though, just not the demand. I think the hardcore gaming market is still not big enough to warrant such a mainstream device, and as I've said, it may be seen as a bit unnecessary due to the already existing mobile gaming market, but I'm still hoping for one in the future anyway.
I loved the design and the idea behind it but they didn't make the device powerful enough at the time to really run anything.. If they made a more powerful version I think I would honestly consider it..
I did hear it kind of lagged a bit and from the footage I've seen online it does seem kind of slow especially compared to today's standards, but I'm sure that if they made one now it would be up to standard.
It was super behind other devices that had come out at the same time but it was nice for 2D emulators..
Lol I didn't know it was substandard even at the time, but I guess that played a huge part in their downfall. I also did get interested with it mostly for the emulators though. I heard it was great for playing PS1 games.
You could play PS1 games on a built in emulator I believe.. That was probably the coolest thing about it..
It was probably nice to pass the time when we have nothing else to do, as it's portable and discrete. I never tried it, so I have to ask, what type of games were available? Was it fast enough or laggy? Were the games any good or nintendo level quality? xD
It got pretty bad sales. The phone should've been released as a gaming system and not a phone. It lacked a lot of quality to be called a phone.
Yeah I have seen the phone, it runs an android OS and an adreno GPU, and you needed a micro sim to use it. Well its all touchscreen now, so unless it boasts really high specs, such phones are irrelevant. And just to be slim the keys resulted to be a less than comfortable solution for gaming. Every android phone can play games well now, and function well as a phone, something that Xperia play lacked.
I guess that's a point. Every android phones can play games properly now. Regardless of that, if they only advertised it better they could of got better sales, and of-course, make it work without a SIM card like most phones now a days.
Yeah I think the thickness of these phones definitely did a lot to hurt their value with the public, but I personally don't mind and I even think they could do a much better job of designing it now with new technology.
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_play-reviews-3608.php Personally I never really had the opportunity to try it out.
PSP already existed by this time so I don't think it would have done them any good to release this as another one. I think it was just too niche. Smartphone fans didn't want it and only a handful of gamers were attracted to it, though like I said, maybe if they came out with a slimmer and faster modern version it might do better.
I think it was a cool concept at the time, but it quickly grew outdated spec-wise. Nowadays, buying a cheap $5 clip and a Sony Sixaxis controller can achieve the same experience.
When I saw it, I thought, didn't Sony see how hard the N-Gage flopped? It's one thing if it was a full-functioning PSP with texting and calling capabilities. But the game library was severely limited. I would just buy a flagship phone and pair my wiimote with it.
You're right. I think even at the time the specs were underpowered as from what I've seen it could only play games up to PS1 and not much more. Had it been able to emulate PS2 games I'm sure many people would have gravitated towards it a bit more.
Hah, even the most powerful desktop computers have issues emulating PS2 games today, much less current smartphones. It'll be a few years before we even see 10FPS emulation.
