Are racing games realistic enough at the moment?

While like I've said before, realism in a racing game is the main thing I look for, but no matter what the game developers do, it's always going to come down to what hardware you're using.

A controller can never replace a steering wheel after all, no matter how good the graphics of a game are.

I think racing games have become more realistic. But, I am tired of street racing in the city. I wish game developers would make a racing game for highways. I seen Japanese games with street racing on the highway. Street racing needs a change of pace and a change of scenery.

There does seem to be an influx of the street racing games, probably ever since Fast and the furious movie came out.

While there have been some decent games, I do think now that genre is getting a little monotonous now, and I'm wanting a racing game that's focused more on the racing rather than what mods you can do to the vehicle.

Agreed. I am getting a bit tired of the homogenized environments at this point as well and all racing games seem to look the same to me especially now that they all use licensed cars. Though initially I attributed this mostly to my lack of interest for realistic games against my preferred arcade style which tends to be a bit more varied since you could do much more with fantastical elements.

People are never going to all have the same tastes though, but that's a good thing otherwise all the games would be the same.

I prefer the realism of the simulators, you prefer the excitement of the arcade games, it keeps the game developers on their toes, and makes them design games for everyone, and that's how it should be, haha!

Yes and no. The graphics are almost as life-like as they get for next gen consoles and PC but some of the physics need to be improved a little bit. I find it very easy sometimes to turn a corner braking at the last second going 100 mph; of course it's fun, but it takes away from the realism factor that I crave in a simulation game. GTA and the Burnout series are exceptions when a focus is made on absurdity, but not games like Forza or Project Cars.

Yeah, I definitely agree with the racing mechanics not being quite there yet. To be fair though, we all know they have to introduce some sort of arcade element to appeal to a wider audience. I love having a perfectly realistic racer, but they're in it to make money as well and most people won't have the patience to learn the ropes well enough.

There are some sim racing games which try hard enough to replicate the physics of a real car:

    R3E
    Asseto Corsa
    rFactor 2

And others. I think we are edging closer to a time when sim racing games will get it [the realism factor] right 100%.

The driving physics in Gran Turismo are pretty close to the real thing. The thing missing is the actual driving setup. No matter how real the driving physics is, the real feel of driving can't be replicated through a game controller. You still need a wheel and pedal setup to get the true driving experience.

I remembe briefly playing Forza at a friend's house back in the day. I can't remember what the driving physics were like. i do remember the cars getting damage though. In Grand Turismo, the cars never took any damage.

I honestly feel like you need one of those booths that move along with the video game to get an authentic feel. I just feel like there's something off with Gran Turismo. You may be right that it's because we play with controllers though.

I'm no expert on driving physics, but GT is widely known as one of the most realistic driving simulator video games out there. To get the most realistic driving experience, you would need one of those arcade wheel and pedal setups. I haven't been to arcades lately, but there's probably a solid one that exists today.

Nowadays, all the games are released with superb graphics and I must say that the games are realistic. Not all of the games are realistic but the games from the amazing developers like RockStar, Criterion, etc are enough realistic as compared to other games.

That's an interesting point about needing a wheel and pedal set up to get the true realism in a racing game and it does make more difference than you'd imagine.

I played Gran Turismo at a friend's house with that set up, complete with a racing/gaming chair, and it does make a massive difference.

I think for the very realistic games this would be the best way to enjoy them. For me I like the arcade type racers where you have goals to crash and bump into cars and traffic and for those I'm way too used to controllers. Although now that I think about it I think it would be fun to play even those games on a good setup.

The key word in that statement is good. There's a lot of gaming chairs, wheels and pedals that you can buy now at a relatively cheap price, but they're simply not that good.

A cheap setup will make your control of the game worse and if it's a choice between one of those and a controller then I'd be tempted to just save up and stick to the controller for now.

I agree too. With all the new virtual reality, it's pretty similar to drive a real life car. We've advanced allot, and every effort put into virtual reality was good because now we can experience how it's like to be in a car.

With today's graphics, absolutely. I really can't complain much, because screenshots alone these days would make you question which is real and which was taken in game. The one thing I do complain about, and I'm not really sure if we can do anything about it, is the fact that these simulation games and their corresponding consoles, driving pads, multiple monitors, are all incredibly expensive, to the point where only a select few can play them.

Yes, I agree with you. The cars were really awesome. In my opinion, most of the games in his age are realistic.

It's true but we need to wait till we get the first VR game. It would be really fun to play the VR games.
