It’s becoming fashionable for high-profile video games to run their beta tests in public these days, but until now, it’s mostly been the domain of AAA multiplayer first-person shooters. Other genres are getting the hang of it, though, and last weekend EA announced that one of their racing games would hold a public beta — Need For Speed. If you’ve been following the development of Need For Speed, you know how badly it needs to be tested. It’s going to be sporting several features that have spelled trouble for other games in the past, like required internet connectivity, as well as features that have NEVER been tested in public, like its touted integration of multiplayer into a fixed storyline. They’ve gotta hold a beta to make sure this stuff even works! If you want to get on the beta list, there’s no purchase necessary….just go to this page and enter your name and info. Not everyone who signs up may be chosen, but you can’t get in if you’re not on the list to begin with. You’ve got ten days — the list closes on September 25. The information EA gave out implies the beta will be a console exclusive….Playstation 4 and XBox One were mentioned as participants, but not the PC. Betas can and often do help games of all genres improve themselves before release, although it's not unheard of a beta-tested game to still be incredibly broken upon release. I doubt that'll happen here, but a beta doesn't guarantee a better game.
I feel like one of the most successful betas in the past five years occurred with Halo: Reach. People really enjoyed that beta, and the multiplayer portion of the game came out as incredibly solid due to the beta and feedback from it.
Will be good to get much more feedback and spot bugs the developers might not have seen or overlooked. Good idea I say. I just hope they reconsider the mandatory online requirement...
Nice, I'm going to sign up for beta ASAP, hopefully I get picked! Also, does anyone around here have any idea if the beta will be available at the same time as the PS4 and XBONE editions? PC launch was delayed, so..
I want to say yes but with the PC delay I wouldn't be surprised to see the beta delayed for a while. Best thing to do is stay optimistic, but expect the worst, if that makes sense.
I'm very excited for this game so I'd very much like to get an early look into what they are working on. Then again, I don't want to spoil my experience of enjoying the final product either, so I personally would stay away but it's one of the titles that actually feels tempting to me.
I feel like that about so many early release games that I would like to get. I want to get the early release but at the same time I don't want to spoil the experience which is what I'm bound to feel when it releases fully.
I don't think you spoil your experience by testing the game early, you just get a glimpse of it that makes you hyped. I played in some betas before and it didn't affect the game for me in any way, it was actually quite fun.
I don't know, I just feel like I'd be spoiling the experience way too early. Like when you're a kid a few days before Christmas time and you learn what your parents have got for you. It spoils it.
I know how you feel. Rarely does a game get me hyped enough to make me feel like I can't wait though, but since I have a history with this title and I have heard the things they are trying to do with this new one I've gotten very curious.
I would really like to try another NFS underground street racing style game but I think Forza spoiled me a bit in that you can add body kits and their livery editor is just so easy to use and powerful too. The last NFS I played was Undergrou7nd too and the bodykits in there were fun but the livery editor was a little basic and rubbish.
I always get a little leery when I hear about beta trials online. There were a lot of scammers on Craigslist, Los Angeles posting about beta tester jobs in the area. I would rather wait ill the game comes about. I don't want to play a game full of bugs! Just me!
I didn't know abut scammers exploiting this. I am the same way I usually wait a while before playing because I prefer starting when the game is polished.
How was that scam working? Were the scammers pretty much saying something to the effect of "come down to so-and-so and test for us"or "give us you credentials so we can email this beta oppertunity to you!"
Oh wow, I wish I had seen this sooner, I missed the deadline. Guess I'll just have to wait for the game to be released to give it a try.
Kinda sucks not being able to join the beta for PC users, but I suppose it’ll just make the first time I play it in November an even more exciting experience.
