Don't get me wrong fellas, I like myself a good horror movie, The Shining being my all time favorite. Anyways it is as if the horror movies we see today are just bland and boring scare fests. I just can't get into a horror movies these days, because they're full of cliche after cliche. Oh no I fell down after running away from the killer, oh my car wont start, etc. Stuff like this really turns me off of horror as a genre these days.

Are horror movies not scary anymore?

I haven't seen any lately that were really scary.
I saw half of The Exorcist as a kid and never got through the whole thing. Nothing I've seen since then has really matched up to it

I agree. It's why I tend to watch foreign horror mostly, as everything out of Hollywood is the same. Too many 'Paranormal Activity' type films, and exorcism movies!

Oh hell yeah to foreign horror. The Orphanage is one movie that comes to mind for me, it's not really scary, but it makes you think, and I dig that. One other movie that comes to mind is The Devil's Backbone, which is more serious than anything and I really love that movie.

American horror tends to suck, while foreign or indie films do it right. Oh V/H/S/ is a film I enjoyed. I wasn't really scared, just more weirded out, and they did a good job. Plus the whole atmosphere of the movie got me a bit scared I'll admit.

The Orphanage was great! Creepy, and very atmospheric. Enjoyed that a lot.

I have only recently noticed how good the foreign horror movies are, the girl with a dragon tattoo for example(foreign version) is dark and gloomy and l enjoyed it but I did not even watch the hollywood version all the way through.

I still enjoy horror movies these days actually. I was loved the horror movie called Insidious (2010). Of course there are the horror classic movies like The Exorcist. Which will always be 'special' for the horror films industrial, that nothing will compare. Although, the horror movies I still enjoy to this day. Can't forget to mention The Conjuring. I loved it! The movie captivated me, and freaked me the hell out! So, with that said! I still get a few scares from horror movies these days.

I am not scare by any movies these days. It's weird, I think thrillers scare me more, maybe movies where someone is kept captive or something like that scares me more. Much of the American market of movies are usually the same to me. We see so many slasher, zombie movies, extreme gory movies.

Oh, one movie that really kind of scared me was Rec 1 and 2. Seriously, go watch those movies. Quarantine was a remake of the first Rec movie and it's really good. The zombies in this movie make you freak. That and 28 Days Later.

Most horror movies nowadays are lame. Not to say that there aren't good ones but most of them are either torture porn like Saw or stupid found footage movies that can put anyone to sleep.

How is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo a horror flick? It's a measly crime thriller.

I'm not a massive horror fan, but they have recently became pretty bad. Evil Dead was quite good though, but apart from that most have been awful. Insidious was weird and in my opinion really poor. They brought a devil into it, and had random pop ups when people were talking.

Insidious was awful, especially when you got a look at the 'demon' and it had goat legs. I did have a giggle when it was trotting around.

REC was amazing, glad someone mentioned it!

The worst thing about it is how overrated it is. People who haven't seen the classics and who don't know how overexposed satanic overtones in horror were at one point of time thought that the goat monster was a really innovative scare.

I only saw the movie because of the hype and was even more disappointed than most people by it.

Yeah, I watched it because of the hype and ended up annoyed that it was so bad!

Most movies nowadays are have gone down since the beginning and the horror movies have now become less scary and more visual effects. They don't really put the tense scenes and just jump scares. The most recent movie that really piled up on the tense and scary scenes and less jump scares is The Conjuring. It's not as good as past horror movies, but it really does follow the old movies formula.

Following a formula and failing to get the right answer are two different things. When movie-makers figured that blood and gore is the 'thing' to go for they made a mistake. All these sub-genres [slashers, tissue-wrenching critters, etc.] they're all crap.

IMO horror movies made from '99 and beyond are no good.

There are plenty of good horror films from recent years, you just need to find what works. Hollywood stuff rarely hits the mark for me these days, but French and Asian horror do a really good job most of the time.

Asian movies? Give us some titles. I'm a movie buff and I'm game to watch any good movie any time.

As two others have mentioned, The Conjuring did a really good job. I was genuinely scared during a number of the parts. It's really good at making you care about the characters and what's happening to them. Does it offer anything new to the genre? Nope. But not messing with the classic scares is better than not working at all.

Also, if you haven't seen it, you should watch The Strangers. This one's basic premise is pretty scary. A couple out in the country, 3 strangers decide to kill them. Why? Because they happened to be home.
