I've always pictured Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood pretty boy that stars in a heap load of romantic comedy movies. I know he was in The Notebook. Crazy, Stupid Love I enjoyed and he was a major supporting character. However, he was also in acclaimed movies like The Idle of March and Drive. Both movies had such dark underthemes and Drive scared the living **** out of me. And then I saw Only God Forgives and I figured out two things. Ryan Gosling is a very good actor. And the movies he starred in recently are terribly dark and extremely disturbing. It looks like he wants out of the typecast. What do you guys think?

I saw The Notebook. Hated that movie. Most actors hate being typecast. Brad PItt did Fight Club and Seven because he didn't want to be type cast as a pretty boy that does chick flicks.

Well, this sounds like a late response (because it is) but yeah I sort of agree with you. But sometimes, along with the intention of breaking being typecast, it also allows the actor or actress to finally see some dramatic acting chops along with whatever they are typecast by. For example Jim Carrey and then comes The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Ryan Gosling may had some cheesy recent roles but films like The Idles of March, Drive, Only God Forgives, Lost River are too good to be called only as a way to break typecasting.

I don't think he is extraordinary in acting talent but he still shines in the right roles and he's still very likeable anyway which is very important. I think he's gotten less exposure recently but hopefully he'll come back and show some range with a new character in the future.

I never thought of him as an established actor mainly because he got his start on the Mickey Mouse Club. I couldn't take him seriously. I did like him in Drive though, mainly because he didn't talk at all and I only had to look at him. :)

Ryan Gosling is OK but I just see him as a pretty boy that the girls like to drool over.

Ryan Gosling is a pretty cool chick flick but I don't really like him as an actor. There are better ones out there like DiCaprio who are worthy of becoming Hollywood legends.
