Forgive my ignorance, most of the racing games that I have played are either fantasy (Crash Bandicoot, Mario Kart), or just aims for realistic racing through the streets of cities (Gran Turismo, GTA), or just F1 racing. I have never played anything that involves dirt racing before. Can you guys tell me where to start? What games can I play that will get me the feel of dirt racing?

Well I can't really tell you a game to play, that would defeat the purpose. I would recommend checking out some new games, not trailer wise but look at some game play videos and if your friends have those games, go over to their house and try it out. If you like it a lot, buy and and play it!

You could start with the Dirt series. The game developer, Codemasters has been making dirt games since 1998. That's probably the reason why their dirt [racing] games are the best.

While I also wouldn't tell you what games to play, if you're looking to play a dirt racing game, then like @Denis Hard says, the Dirt series of games is the place to start and is well established as the best in the genre.

Yes, that's a good suggestion. He should start with the Dirt series.

Well, the Dirt series are fine. I guess you don't want to start off with something out in 1998. So, don't worry. They have plenty of contemporary stuff.

There is a bunch of them out there and it's all about personal taste. Try and rent some or borrow a copy from a friend. Read up on some reviews and see what features catches your eye and that you might want to entertain. Lots of games to test out so be patient unless your loaded and will buy all that is available.

Definitely. He would not like to start with a 1998 game!

There are a lot of games available for you to choose from. You should leave it up your own decision where you want to start. I find it a bit sad that you haven't played any yet. They are really fun and provides more challenge than your typical car game. I hope you give it a shot soon.

I agree with the fact that Codemasters is a good developer company but I think that Criterion games is much better than this developer.

Definitely, Criterion have the bigger and better franchise but I wouldn't discredit Codemasters at all. After all, Formula 1 is one of the best racing games I've played to date.

Dirt is the one I find most enjoyable these days. There are older games you could just look up but I think these new ones have a lot more complexity that makes them a lot more fun in my opinion.

Criterion certainly is a good developer but they focus more on making arcade racers [Burnout Paradise was one of the best arcade racers, wasn't it?] while Codemasters makes mostly sims [F1, Dirty Rally and others] but it's in dirt racing they take the crown as best developers.

I was thinking about that and came to the conclusion... so, why not? I used to play a lot of Grand Turismo back in the day. It's not about the graphics, it's about the vibe the game give you. Old games are cool, too.

Really? I love playing dirt racing games because I love the feel and the sound of the dirt just crunching under my wheels. It is so satisfying to hear that crunch and you get that nice traction when you are wheeling all over the place. You gotta try it man!

Yes, I agree with you. There are many cool old games. Among all of the older racing games, my favourite one was Grand Turismo. I love that game. Yes, you are right. They give off a postive vibe.

Yes, I also agree with the idea that the more complex the structure is, the more interesting the game is. It's a right concept and I believe in it.
